Get the More of Right Things Done (Because There are Only 24hrs in a Day and You Want to Make a Life and a Living)

Sometimes I wish there were more than 24 hours in a day. Especially when the weather is just perfect and I want to spend a little more time in my garden.  Maybe you wish for just a few more hours in the day too? Many smart busy professionals tell me they long for more hours in the day so they can get it ALL in. But I’ve discovered what they are actually yearning for is to enjoy the real materials of their lives now. Not some magical day in the future when everything when you have ticked off everything you should do on your to-do list.  The bottom line is doing the right thing is no longer enough; you need to find the right things to do.

Otherwise you mind find that:

  • You’re gob smacked that summer has whizzed by and you have not gotten around to taking a vacation, tennis lessons (or whatever piques your interest).
  • You’ve morphed into a nagging micro manager and that is sucking the vitality out of you
  • You’re so in demand that its hard not to feel wrung out and put upon

Doing the right thing means doing what you “should” or “ought to do” because that is what circumstances, your job, someone or society says you need to address.  Getting the right things done, means your most dedicated efforts are on the tasks, projects, people, hurdles and adventures that fundamentally align with the real materials of your life (the people, things and experiences that matter to you most and make you feel ALIVE).

Both are important. But, many of my clients find that doing the right things leads to rarely, and in some cases never, getting the right things done.  They get caught up in a mad dash to plow through their to-do list.  Days feel chaotic and crowed. Worse you don’t get around to making the real materials of your life the non-negotiable priority. This can erode your zest for life, leaving you feeling numb, burnt out and resentful of who and what is in your life. 

Yuck. That simply is not good for you as a person, a parent, a colleague, a boss or any other role you take on in your life. It is vital to take time to enjoy your life, as well as, work.

Stop Wasting Your Time: Two Key Things Smart Busy Professionals Do to Get More of the Right Things Done

One of life’s often underrated, or worse undiscovered joys, grows from giving of your best ability in all that you undertake. Always doing your best in every endeavor leads to a singular spectacular sense of pride and satisfaction and to work that is full, precise, and worthy. Your work becomes an art form. Each small task, action or effort is a miraculous reflection of your art, because you invest time in mastering your strengths. This is something people who settle for good enough or half-done will never know.  But you likely already do know (or could know) because you are smart busy person who strives to do your best and cannot afford to waste your time or squander your capacities.

You also know that life is not made of work alone, regardless of how important your work is (or your paycheck). You know that a full, well-formed life- one that is flourishing- is one where the things you love and the things you to do well come together. Where there is time and space for the real materials of your life so you cultivate your interests, identity and values in such a way they support rather than confound your work and the rest of your life. Of course this is easier said than done for many people. Maybe even you?

More and more people now define themselves by the nature or content of work they do within a profession (rather than their specific jobs or the company they work for) as well as the real materials of their lives (the people, activities and things that mater most to you). Personally I think this shift to grounding our identities in the whole of who we are and what we offer the world is wonderful. Binding our strongest connections with our families, friends and communities seems to be a much more human and healthy approach than perhaps the path we have wandered down over time. As wonderful, healthy and human as this shift is, it can be tricky and taxing to make- leaving you feeling as if you are swimming up-stream.

Yes, finding your way to on a more flourishing path is not without its challenges and frustrations. But I know I can help you move beyond these.
